Andrew Nembhard is a young Canadian professional basketball player who is a driving force for the Indiana Pacers in the NBA. Andrew emerged as one of the surprise stars for this season, leading the defense of the Pacers while Tyrese Haliburton led the offensive side. Nembhard plays with a clear focus on the Pacers’ overall game plan, not just targeting. He explained that the team isn’t trying to center their strategy on attacking one player.
Instead, they aim to stick to their system and play smart basketball. His words show a calm and thoughtful mindset, built for playoff pressure. Winning in the postseason takes teamwork and the ability to adjust to different situations. This approach helps the Pacers stay sharp no matter who they face.
Andrew Nembhard was born on January 16, 2000, in Aurora, Ontario in Canada. He is the son of his father Claude Nembhard, and his mother Mary Nembhard. He has a younger brother named Ryan Nembhard who was born on March 10, 2003. Even his brother is a basketball player who recently joined the WCC. As a student, Andrew attended the Vaughan Secondary school in Ontario and then attended the Montverde Academy in Florida, United States. He then attended Florida College in 2018 and graduated from there in 2020 and then joined Gonzaga college in 2020 and currently studies there.
Andrew, in his freshman season with the Gators, started every game, and he tallied the fourth-highest freshman assist total in his school history. He scored an average of 8.0 points, 2.9 rebounds, and 5.4 assists and finished fifth in the Southeastern Conference in the assist-turnover ratio. He was then declared for the 2019 NBA draft, but he chose to play for the Gators for his sophomore season. At that stage, he scored an average of 11.2 points, 5.6 rebounds, and 3.0 assists per game which led the SEC with a 2.2 assist to turnover ratio.
In the next season, he was declared for the 2020 NBA draft but hired an NCAA-certified agent which allowed him to return to Florida. He announced that he would transfer to Gonzaga and chose to play for the Bulldogs from June 2020 over Duke, USC, Stanford, and many more from where he got a place offered. In 2021, the first season, he primarily came off where he averaged 9.0 points, 2.4 rebounds, and 4.4 assists for a team that entered its conference tournament unbeaten.
The Indiana Pacers picked Nembhard 31st overall in the 2022 NBA Draft. He joined their Summer League team and made a strong first impression. In his debut, he posted five points, five rebounds, and five assists in a win over the Charlotte Hornets.
On July 22, 2022, Nembhard signed a four-year rookie deal worth $8.6 million. It became the largest contract ever given to a second-round draft pick.
A few months later, on November 28, he hit a buzzer-beating three-pointer to beat the Los Angeles Lakers 116–115. Nembhard stepped up again on December 5. With Tyrese Haliburton sidelined, he scored a career-high 31 points with 13 assists, 8 rebounds, and 5 threes in a win over the Golden State Warriors.
On January 31, 2023, he was named a Rising Star for the NBA, joining teammate Bennedict Mathurin. Nembhard kept shining in March. He scored 24 points against the Bucks on March 16, then followed up with 22 points on 9-for-14 shooting against the 76ers on March 18.
His strong play continued on March 22, when he dropped 25 points and 10 assists on the Raptors. He followed that with a 15-point, 15-assist performance on March 28 in another game against the Bucks.
On May 10, 2024, Nembhard hit the biggest shot of his career. With 16 seconds left, he made a deep three-pointer to beat the Knicks in Game 3 of the second playoff round. It was the longest shot of his career and helped the Pacers cut the series deficit to 2–1.
