While living in a Midwestern town, Jamie learned to be dedicated, work hard, and act with integrity—qualities that would shape her coaching life. She was very good at softball while she was young and competed both in community leagues and school teams.
After high school, she joined St. Cloud State University and competed in NCAA Division II softball during her college years. Being a collegiate athlete allowed Jamie to find out how demanding it is to balance studies, sports, and personal development. This encouraged her to want to remain involved in the sport by coaching. Her approach to coaching was influenced by the discipline, teamwork and leadership skills she gained while playing.
Career
For nearly two decades, Jamie Trachsel has worked as a coach, making consistent progress, achieving strong results and helping to build programs. Her first major coaching job was at North Dakota State University (NDSU), where she began as an assistant and later became co-head coach. At NDSU, Jamie helped the Bison achieve several trips to the NCAA tournament. Her focus on strong defense and being mentally tough helped her shape a winning culture at the school.
In 2017, Jamie was hired to be the head coach at Iowa State University. Despite spending little time there, she significantly increased the team’s chances of success in the challenging Big 12 Conference. Her guidance improved the team, which led bigger programs to take notice of the Cyclones.
In 2018, Jamie joined the University of Minnesota and began to make a name for herself nationally. In just two years, she brought the Golden Gophers to the Women’s College World Series for the first time in 2019, an achievement that stands out for the program. Her ability to rapidly turn around a team and challenge top teams showed how skilled she was as a coach.
In 2020, Jamie Trachsel took charge at Ole Miss and helped the team adopt a culture that promoted accountability, mental toughness and teamwork. Since she took over, Ole Miss has improved a lot in their achievements and how they develop their players. Jamie stresses the importance of developing strong character and leadership, in addition to athletic skills, to help players achieve success in other parts of life.
Going from a small Minnesota town to becoming a leader of a top NCAA team shows how committed, flexible and knowledgeable she is about the game. Jamie is aiming to make Ole Miss a top team in the world of college softball.
As a gay athlete, Jamie encourages LGBTQ+ acceptance in sports and works to ensure both athletes and coaches feel welcome and supported. Her genuine approach and leadership in sports help to represent diversity and encourage a change in stereotypes in college athletics.
