He attended Iowa State University and was selected by the Sacramento Kings in the 2020 NBA Draft. As part of a trade package for Domantas Sabonis in 2022, the Indiana Pacers acquired Haliburton. He was selected to play in his first All-Star Game in 2023 as an Eastern Conference reserve.
Tyrese Haliburton was born on February 29, 2000, in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. He was raised in a basketball family, as both his mother and father played Division III basketball at Iowa State. Tyrese began playing basketball at the age of three and quickly developed a passion for the game.
As a freshman at Iowa State, he set the program’s single-game assist record. Despite a season-ending wrist injury, he had a breakout sophomore season and was named to the All-Big 12 Conference Second Team. At the FIBA Under-19 World Cup in Heraklion, Greece, in 2019, Haliburton led the USA to a gold medal and was named to the tournament’s All-Tournament Team.
Haliburton played high school basketball at Oshkosh North High School in Wisconsin. As a sophomore, he was selected to the All-Fox Valley Association (FVA) Second Team and the All-Defensive Team. During his junior year, he averaged 18 points, six assists, and five rebounds per game, earning FVA Player of the Year and Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) Division I All-State honors, although his team narrowly missed the State Tournament.
He led his team to its first state championship with a win over Brookfield East High School in the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association Division I title game. Haliburton received numerous accolades, including Wisconsin Gatorade Player of the Year, FVA Co-Player of the Year, and Oshkosh Northwestern All-Area Player of the Year. He was also named to the USA Today All-USA Wisconsin First Team and the WBCA Division I All-State Team.
Haliburton was selected by the Sacramento Kings with the 12th overall pick in the first round of the 2020 NBA Draft. The Kings officially signed him on November 27, 2020. He made his NBA debut on December 23, 2020. In overtime, his team defeated the Denver Nuggets 124–122, with Haliburton making key contributions off the bench.
On May 2, 2021, Haliburton suffered a left knee injury during a game against the Dallas Mavericks. Although an MRI later revealed no ligament damage, the Kings announced that he would sit out the final seven games of the 2020–21 season as a precaution. Haliburton finished third in Rookie of the Year voting and was named to the NBA All-Rookie First Team.
On January 29, 2022, Tyrese Haliburton scored a career-high 38 points, along with seven assists, three rebounds, and two steals, in a 103–101 loss to the Philadelphia 76ers. On February 5, he posted a career-high 17 assists, along with 13 points, six rebounds, and two steals, in a win over the Oklahoma City Thunder (113–103).
On February 8, 2022, the Pacers acquired Tyrese Haliburton, Buddy Hield, and Tristan Thompson in exchange for Domantas Sabonis, Justin Holiday, Jeremy Lamb, and a 2023 second-round pick. Haliburton made his Pacers debut on February 11 against the Cleveland Cavaliers, finishing with 23 points, six assists, three rebounds, and three steals in a 120–113 loss.
