Locke & Key is a fantasy-horror comic book series created by Joe Hill and Gabriel Rodríguez. It centers on the Locke family and the mysterious Keyhouse, an old family mansion in the fictional town of Lovecraft, Massachusetts. Following the murder of their father, the three Locke siblings—Tyler, Kinsey, and Bode—move to the Keyhouse with their mother. They soon discover magical keys hidden throughout the house, each with unique powers that allow them to do things like change their appearance, travel through doors, or even enter people’s minds.

The story combines supernatural elements, psychological horror, and coming-of-age themes. The family learns that the keys are linked to dark forces and a vengeful demon named Dodge, who will stop at nothing to control the power of the keys. The series explores themes of trauma, family, resilience, and the cost of power. Locke & Key was also adapted into a Netflix series, which ran for three seasons, keeping many elements of the original comic but making some changes to the storyline and characters.

Where was Locke & Key filmed?

Locke & Key was primarily filmed in Canada, with main production locations in Ontario and Nova Scotia. The show’s fictional setting, the town of Matheson, Massachusetts, comes to life through the historic streets of Lunenburg, Nova Scotia. Lunenburg’s picturesque and haunting Victorian architecture provides the perfect atmosphere for the mystery and supernatural elements central to Locke & Key.

Many interior scenes, including those within the mysterious Keyhouse, were shot on soundstages in Toronto, Ontario, where production teams had control over elaborate set designs and special effects required to portray the magical world of the series. Filming in Canada offered the production team access to diverse locations that mimic New England’s eerie charm and access to tax incentives, making Ontario and Nova Scotia ideal for the show’s haunting visuals.

Locke & Key Cast:

  • Darby Stanchfield as Nina Locke – The mother of the Locke children, who moves the family to Keyhouse after her husband’s tragic death.
  • Connor Jessup as Tyler Locke – The eldest Locke sibling, dealing with the responsibilities of protecting his family.
  • Emilia Jones as Kinsey Locke – The middle child who struggles with her fears and emotions, especially after discovering the powers of the keys.
  • Jackson Robert Scott as Bode Locke – The youngest sibling and the first to discover the magical keys, as well as the sinister entity known as Dodge.
  • Laysla De Oliveira as Dodge – The main antagonist, a powerful and manipulative demon who wants to control the magical keys for her own sinister purposes.
  • Griffin Gluck as Gabe – Kinsey’s friend who has a surprising connection to Dodge and becomes a complex figure in the story.
