The Amateur

“The Amateur” is an upcoming American espionage action-thriller film directed by James Hawes and adapted from Robert Littell’s 1981 novel of the same name.

The screenplay was written by Ken Nolan and Gary Spinelli.

The film stars Rami Malek as Charles Heller, a CIA cryptographer who, after losing his wife in a London terrorist attack, realizes that his superiors will not take action due to internal conflicts.

To seek justice, Heller blackmails the agency into training him as a field operative and sets off on a solo mission to hunt down his wife’s killers.

The cast includes Laurence Fishburne, Rachel Brosnahan, Caitríona Balfe, Jon Bernthal, Michael Stuhlbarg, Holt McCallany, Julianne Nicholson, Adrian Martinez, Danny Sapani, and Takehiro Hira.

Filming locations include the southeast of England, France, and Turkey, with principal photography starting in June 2023.

The film experienced delays due to the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike but resumed by December 2023. The release is now scheduled for April 11, 2025, having been previously set for November 8, 2024.
