Wendy McMahon is an American media executive and television leader who recently resigned from CBS News. She decided to step down amid her conflict and legal dispute with the Donald Trump. Her exit follows closely after Bill Owens, the longtime executive producer of 60 Minutes, stepped down.
Owens claimed the show had lost its journalistic independence, raising concerns about editorial control. Former President Donald Trump has also filed a lawsuit against CBS. He accuses the network of editing an interview with Vice President Kamala Harris in a way that favored her during the 2024 campaign.
CBS News strongly denies the allegation. Reports say that CBS’ parent company, Paramount Global, is in settlement talks with Trump over the matter. On August 14, 2023, she stepped into the role of President and CEO of CBS News. CBS Media Ventures owns the rights to popular game shows like Jeopardy! and Wheel of Fortune.
Wendy McMahon, born in 1974 or 1975, is a native of New Orleans. She earned a Bachelor’s degree in Mass Communication with a focus on Broadcast Journalism and attended Louisiana State University from September 1992 to May 1996.
In April 2021, CBS named Wendy McMahon and Neeraj Khemlani as co-presidents of the new CBS News and Stations division. This decision followed the exit of Peter Dunn and David Friend, who left after allegations of harassment and favoritism.
CBS began connecting its national and local news operations more closely. In January 2022, the CBSN streaming platforms were renamed CBS News. That same month, CBS opened a Local News and Innovation Lab in Fort Worth, Texas. This team focused on creating newscasts that combined local and national content for stations in ten cities.
By June 2022, the Fort Worth team worked with CBS’s investigative reporters to launch Crime Without Punishment. This series aired both locally and as a 30-minute national streaming feature. In Detroit, CBS brought back local evening news on WWJ-TV for the first time since 2002.
Wendy McMahon supported the idea after hearing from the station’s leadership. CBS News Detroit launched in January 2023, followed by a morning show in February. Los Angeles also saw major changes. In July 2022, KCAL-TV started a seven-hour morning newscast from 4:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.
KCBS-TV adjusted its schedule to include live CBS Mornings broadcasts from the East Coast and later simulcast parts of the KCAL show. McMahon said replacing paid programming with news was a smart growth move. CBS also brought veteran journalist Jamie Yuccas from national to local news. Both stations rebranded under the name KCAL News.
Other cities updated their local stations to match the look of CBS national programs. In 2022, CBS sold most of its stake in The CW to Nexstar Media Group. CBS pulled eight of its CW stations from the network in September 2023.
Khemlani stepped down on August 13, 2023. The next day, CBS promoted McMahon to sole president and CEO of CBS News and Stations. She also became president of CBS Media Ventures, which distributes Jeopardy! and Wheel of Fortune, following Steve LoCascio’s retirement after 34 years.
McMahon resigned on May 19, 2025. She cited disagreements with CBS leadership about the company’s direction. At that time, CBS faced a lawsuit from Donald Trump. He claimed 60 Minutes edited an interview with Kamala Harris in a way that helped her politically.
